Many of our kids beds can be converted into two complete twin beds, perfect if you plan to let your children move into their own bedrooms in the near future. Choose from finishes like brushed gray, creamy white and rich walnut.
Ladders or Stairs
When you are choosing a bunk bed for your kids there is the option to choose between stairs or ladders. Ladders are cheaper and easy to install and provide an easy method of climbing into the bed at the top. They are also considered to be safer than stairs, since they have a bigger surface for children to walk on and a handrail built-in. Ladders usually have grooves in the steps to prevent slips when climbing up and down the bed.
However, if you prefer the style and look of stairs, they may be a more elegant addition to your bunk bed. Staircases can also be utilized in rooms with limited space since they aren't as imposing as ladders. They can be constructed from metal or wood and can be matched to a wide range of bedroom designs. Some staircases even include integrated storage drawers, which are a great way to add more space to the bunk bed.
Another factor to consider when deciding between stairs or a ladder is the age of your child. It is recommended that nobody sleep on the top bunk under the age of 6, older children who are comfortable with climbing vertically may be better off with stairs rather than a ladder. Also when you're thinking of using your bunk bed as guest beds for smaller children or for adults with a limited mobility, stairs are the preferred option.
A straight staircase that runs along the sides of the bunk requires at least 95" of space on each side. If you don't have that space, you can opt for a u-shaped staircase that doesn't need as much space but still offers a secure and safe way to access the top bunk. Certain beds offer the option of distancing the stairs when they're not in use, which further reduces their footprint and makes them more versatile for multipurpose rooms. You can also find stairs that connect to the end of the bed, which eliminates the need for a separate handrail and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
Guard Rails
Guard rails let kids climb in and out of their beds independently and give them the feeling of freedom and confidence. However, they must be set properly, making sure that there are no gaps or movement occurs between rails of the guard and bed frame. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer when installing guard rails, and be sure to check them regularly to ensure they are not loose or have holes that could result in the entrapment.
Keep bunk beds out of electrical appliances and other things that can become projectiles while your children are playing or sleeping. Be sure to place bunks away from windows, as they could be a danger to fall if kids get up on the top of the bed.
A safety feature you may think about is a night lighting for the ladder; this can help to illuminate the ladder's path up and down in the event that children wake at night to go to the bathroom or get woken during a storm and need to make their way from their bedroom in a safe manner.
A safety net could be put up on the top of the bunk to stop children from falling out when they are sleeping or playing. This is a great idea for older kids, who may be more likely to sleep in the top bunk.
Guardrails should be secured to the bunk bed's structure and must not be removed without the use of tools. The guardrail openings that are above the mattress base should not exceed 3.5 inches wide to prevent strangulation or entrapment. To test this, place the wedge block shown in Figure 1 into each opening in the lower edge of the uppermost member of the guardrail and above the mattress's underside foundation. Apply a force of 33 lbf (147 N) in a direction perpendicular the plane of the largest edge of the block for a minute.
It is a good idea to tell your children not to hang any objects on the ladder or guardrail like belts, clothing, and sports equipment. Instead you should make use of an organized rack to keep the objects from creating a strangulation risk for your child. Be sure that not more than one child is sleeping on the top bunk. This could lead to an unsafe imbalance and fall.
Mattresses
When choosing a mattress for bunk beds, consider the size and age of your child. A bunk mattress should last for at least eight years, or until siblings do not share bedrooms and you'll need to pick one that's designed to grow with your child while still providing adequate support as they get older.
There are a variety of bunk mattress sizes. They are usually twin or full size. If your child suffers from allergies or asthma you should choose a hypoallergenic mattress with a dust mite barrier as well as a moisture-wicking cover. Mattresses that have an antimicrobial coating will shield the foam against harmful bacteria and germs.
The feel of your mattress is also crucial. Children are generally heavier than adults and require a mattress which is firm, but also comfortable. Many hybrid and latex mattress have a firm side and a soft side to meet the needs of both children and adults.
Memory foam mattresses be great for children however they're not our first recommendation since they can hold heat and are too hard on young spines. You should consider a hybrid or a latex mattress instead, which offer strong support with cooling infusions that will ensure your child or guest is asleep cool and comfortable.
A mattress with a low profile is typically the best option for kids bunk beds. These mattresses are designed to be smaller than standard mattresses, and maximize the safety rail height of the top bunk. They reduce "filler" material to provide the highest quality and slim designs.
You can consider an innerspring or a hybrid with upper comfort layers that can be removed and replaced as your child grows. These models will provide you with an idea of the mattress's durability as your child grows. You can also include a bed skirt or mattress pad to prevent it from sliding. Some mattresses have side rails or a lip that are built-in to stop this.
